Cowboys of Hawaii

The Parker ranch is a highlight of the Big Island of Hawaii. Founded by John Parker, a New Englander who jumped ship on the Big Island, it is the largest private ranch under single ownership in the United States and a home of the legendary Paniolo or Hawaiian cowboys. In 1803, the first horses were brought to the Big Island. These would become the working companions of Hawaii's Paniolo who began riding the range years before the first mainland cowboys appeared in Texas. The Paniolo continue a long tradition of Hawaiian music, language and lifestyle that is unique part of the Hawaiian culture. Today the Parker Ranch is one of the most well known attractions the Big Island has to offer its visitors.…

Morning Ride - Cowboys of Hawaii Horseback

Description: Come and see where it all began, Parker Ranch, where paniolos (cowboys) and horses first met 150 years ago. The ride starts at the Blacksmith Shop, going on to the Breaking Pen, through rolling hills to the Stone Corrals, where as many as 5000 head of Hereford cattle were held after being driven down from the slopes of Mauna Kea. From there moving on to more historical sites, such as the Race Track where famous Parker Ranch thoroughbreds were trained and still hold world records for speed.
