Polynesian Cultural Center
Of all the attractions on Oahu the Polynesian Cultural Center is probably the most well known and has the distinction of being the largest paid attraction in all of Hawaii. The Polynesian Cultural Center is in all reality an institution of learning, but one that offers education with an element of flare and excitement. The subject matter, after all, is exciting and interesting. Their basis of interest are all of the various cultures of island nations found throughout the Pacific Rim. These island nations all have similarities as they have frequented each other's islands over the years via canoe or sail boats but they also have varied and distinct differences. The Polynesian Cultural Center has set up various villages on its property, each corresponding to the cultures of one of the following: Aoteara from New Zealand, Fiji, Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga and Hawaii. You can actually spend hours at each village (for those that really have an interest you might consider spending more than one day here) as they are all constructed out of actual materials used in the culture and put together in the traditional manner. Each village will have indigenous residence there to welcome you and explain about their culture. This in many cases will take the form of art and handicrafts, dance, song and the use of musical instruments, homemaking and "life in the village" and facets of war and defense. Many of these wonderful islanders will charm you away from your usual modern world and even have you singing or making baskets or throwing spears. All in all you will have entered the magical world of the South Seas. In addition you will have an opportunity to enjoy some of the native foods at a specially prepared "luau" that is the feature of the evening. Here again you will be allowed to participate in native activities that were specifically designed with families in mind. The games and activities offered at this time may include spear throwing, fire-knife dancing and war canoe building. At evenings end you will also be treated to the most famous show of all which is called the "Ha. Breath of Life". This performance will feature over one hundred members of the cast which will perform Polynesian songs and dances in a specially designed twenty-eight hundred seat Pacific Theater.…
