Island Seaplane Service
The Island Seaplane Service offers a unique way to see the island of Oahu from the air: by seaplane. During the beginning days of tourism in Hawaii PanAm flew its famous "China Clipper's" from the mainland to Hawaii and landed in the gentle waters of Keehi Lagoon on the outskirts of Honolulu. Those days have long been over but the romance of those days is alive and well again when you take a flight via seaplane on the Island Seaplane Service. There is something quite different on these flights from other forms of air transportation you could choose and it is evident from the very onset. Instead of checking in at an airport or aircraft hanger you check in at a small wooden office on the rim of a lagoon. Your aircraft is waiting for you on the calm and gentle ocean just off a pier and you automatically realize that you are reverting back to flying in a time when flying was much less of a hassle. Loading onto a plane that is actually sitting on the water is your next clue that things are quite different and taxiing along the ocean as you gain speed is yet another. Seeing Oahu from the air is a special experience as it is an island of contrasts from extreme city environment to lush remoteness but nothing on the one-hour flight can provide more of a chill as when you round the lip of the north shore and head back toward Honolulu on what your pilot explains is the exact trajectory that was taken by the Japanese as they came in the corridor between Oahu's two great mountain ranges on their bombing run to Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th, 1941.…
