In the 1800's Lanai was purchased by the Dole family and became the major producer for the Dole Pineapple Company. This role has diminished in recent years and Lanai has now taken a front seat in the tourist industry.

Lanai Tours and Lanai Activities - Lanai is one of three islands that consist of Maui County along with Molokai and Maui itself. It is the least populated of the three and is a great place to visit or to have a vacation get-a-way. Lanai is the lowest lying of the three islands and as a result draws the least cloud cover and hence the least rainfall. Early attempts in the 1800's to use the island for the production of sugar cane were unsuccessful because of this lack of water but a more successful venture was achieved in the production of pineapple in the early 1900's when the entire island was purchased for that purpose by James Dole. Many field workers were needed to tend the crops and immigrants were brought in to do this difficult work from the Philippines, Korea, Japan, China and Portugal. The small city called Lanai City evolved in the extinct crater head at the top of the island and this "melting pot" of races lived in harmony throughout the century until the harvesting of pineapple became unprofitable in the last decades of the century. The island has now become the location for two of the most spectacular resorts in Hawaii, one in the center of the island near Lanai City and the other down on the ocean at Manele Bay. In addition, two of the most lavish and respected golf courses in Hawaii were built here, one designed by Greg Norman and the other by Jack Nicklaus.
