| Description: Mauna Kea is home to the world's largest telescopes and has atmospheric clarity better than anywhere else on earth! Cutting edge science and new understandings of our universe are constantly flowing from the summit. Mauna Kea has something for everyone, with wonderful ice age scouring, road cuts revealing strata and a well defined Volcanic history. First stop is to the Onizuka Visitor Center at 9200 feet. At the visitor's center you may do some vigorous short climbs or watch videos on Astronomy. There are also hot drinks, snacks and a large range of Mountain and Astronomy related souvenirs and educational materials available for purchase. Following a 30 minute acclimatization stop at the VIS continue on to 13,600 feet where your guide will explain the various telescopes in view. You then ascend the last few hundred feet to the road highpoint where those in good physical condition may hike to the actual summit if conditions permit.
The summit hike and sunset are often at the same time affording spectacular views of sunset and the famous "Shadow" to the East. Following this we descend to the Visitor Center for hot drinks and bathrooms, and then go to our own Starshow location where binoculars are made available and your guide, using a high powered visible laser, leads you on a journey to major celestial objects and Polynesian navigational Stars. | Description: Your tour will start from Kailua-Kona. Drive North through Kona's black lava desert tagged with white coral graffiti. Pass by Kawaihae Harbor where the movie Water World was filmed.
10:00 AM - There will be a 15 minute rest stop at the King Kamehameha's statue.
10:30 AM - Arrives at Pololu Valley lookout and begin descending hike down to valley floor.
11:00 AM - Arrive at Pololu Valley floor - you will have a half hour to explore the Black Sand Beach and river.
12:00 PM - Return from valley hike and a rest stop is made at the Kings View Café where you will be able to purchase lunch and refreshments. An art gallery is also near for customers to explore. This stop will be approximately 30 minutes.
1:00 PM - Enjoy an alternate route down from Kohala while descending through lush green rolling hills. A scenic look out is made to view the two largest volcanoes in the world, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa while still atop of the extinct volcano, Kohala. As you drive the climate changes with the scenery to dry land and cactus.
2:00 PM - Arrive at Mountain Thunder Coffee where The Dirtiest Jobs was filmed with Mike Row. Learn and see how Kona Coffee is grown and processed. Enjoy samples of fresh Kona Coffee and the Mountain Thunder Coffee Gift Shop.
